10 Things That Instantly Help Conversion on Your Website
Someone decides whether to stay on your website or leave within the first few seconds of landing on it. If you don't give them a reason to stay straight away, they'll go to a competitor instead, and most of the time they won't come back.
Here are 10 things that genuinely move the needle, starting with the moment someone lands on your site and working through to the technical foundations that keep bringing people to it in the first place.
1. Give them a reason to stay in the first 3 seconds
Your homepage needs to answer one question immediately: what do you do, and why should I care? If a visitor has to scroll or think to work that out, you've already lost some of them. Lead with clarity, not cleverness.
2. Make the next step obvious
Every page should have one clear, obvious action for the visitor to take next, whether that's getting a quote, booking a call, or getting in touch. If someone has to hunt for how to actually contact you, most people simply won't bother.
3. Check your site actually loads fast
A slow website loses visitors before they've even seen what you offer, especially on mobile. Run your site through Google's PageSpeed Insights and fix anything flagged as a serious issue. Speed isn't just a technical detail, it's a genuine conversion factor.
4. Keep social icons out of the way until the footer
You've worked hard to get someone onto your website. Don't then hand them a one-click exit to Instagram or Facebook before they've had a chance to convert. Social icons belong in the footer, not competing for attention above the fold.
5. Target the locations you actually serve
Make sure you're genuinely findable for the areas you cover, not just your head office town. Dedicated location pages for each area you serve help you show up in local search results you'd otherwise miss entirely.
6. Build trust with real reviews
People trust other people's experiences more than they trust your own marketing copy. Genuine Google reviews, displayed prominently, do more to build trust in a few seconds than a paragraph of self-written claims ever will.
7. Build backlinks from more places than you'd expect
Reviews, social media profiles, Bing Places, and relevant directories all contribute to how trustworthy Google considers your site. Bing specifically is worth not overlooking, since it's the default search engine on Microsoft Edge, which itself is the default browser on most Windows PCs straight out of the box.
8. Keep publishing blog content
Every genuinely useful blog post is another chance to rank for a search term you'd otherwise miss, and another signal to Google that your site is active and worth crawling regularly. Content that actually answers a real question performs far better than content written purely to hit a keyword.
9. Connect Google Search Console and actually check it
Search Console tells you exactly what you're being found for, what you're not, and whether Google is indexing your pages properly at all. Most site owners never look at it. That's a genuine missed opportunity to catch problems before they cost you traffic.
10. Add schema markup, and FAQs on every page
Schema helps Google (and increasingly, AI answer engines) understand exactly what your page is about and can earn you richer, more prominent search results. Pairing it with genuine FAQs on each page gives you content that answers real questions while being structured in a way search engines can read and quote directly.
